She dances so we never forget.
In this profound and deeply moving original painting, a dark-skinned Bomba dancer stands at the intersection of history and resilience. Barefooted on ancient stone, she wears a traditional long white dress and head scarf — the timeless attire of her ancestors. Her left arm lifts the hem of her dress with quiet dignity, while her right arm sweeps it in a wide, deliberate twirl from left to right. And within the heart of that twirl, rendered with unflinching honesty, are the images of enslaved people in chains — the origin story of Bomba itself, carried in every fold of fabric, in every beat of the drum.
Her gaze turns slightly to the left, her expression not one of sorrow, but of solemn urgency — a look that reaches through the canvas and asks you, directly: Do you remember?
The world around her tells the full story. To her right, the ancient stone walls of El Morro rise partially into view — fortress, symbol, witness. To her left, the partial silhouette of a sail ship looms on the horizon, a haunting reminder of the Middle Passage and the forced journey that brought her people to these shores. Above, the sky churns with stormy blues, purples, and whites — turbulent, electric, unresolved. Beneath her bare feet, the stone floor grounds her in the very earth her ancestors were made to build.
This is Bomba as it was born — not just as dance, but as resistance. As memory. As survival transformed into art.
Recuerda is a painting for those who carry history in their bodies and refuse to let it be forgotten. It is a piece that commands presence, demands reflection, and honors the unbreakable spirit of the Afro-Puerto Rican people.
