About La Mosa Galeria
Where Culture Lives on Canvas
Art is not decoration. It is memory. It is identity. It is the thread that connects us to the people and places that shaped us — even when those places are thousands of miles away.
La Mosa Galeria was born from that thread.
The Artist
Monica Ortiz-Sanchez is a self-taught painter based in St. Augustine, Florida, whose work is rooted in the rhythms, colors, and spirit of Puerto Rican culture. She came to painting not as a lifelong pursuit, but as a calling — one that arrived with quiet insistence and refused to be ignored.
Working primarily on wood panels with acrylics, Monica creates pieces that feel both intimate and monumental. Her subjects — the traditions of Bomba and Plena, the faces and landscapes of the island, the cultural memory carried across generations — are rendered with a depth that goes beyond the visual. Each painting is an act of remembrance.
The Journey
Monica's story is one many in the diaspora will recognize. Raised between worlds — the gringa and the nuyorican, the mainland and the island — she grew up holding two cultures at once, sometimes belonging fully to neither. It was her parents' Puerto Rican heritage that became her anchor, and eventually, her muse.
Coming to painting later in life gave her work a particular urgency. There was no time for hesitation, only presence. She taught herself to see, to mix color, to let the wood grain become part of the story. What emerged was a body of work that is unmistakably hers — and unmistakably Puerto Rican.
The Mission
La Mosa Galeria exists to bring that work into the world — and into your home.
Every print, every card, every framed canvas is an invitation to live with art that carries meaning. Art that knows where it comes from. Art that celebrates the music, the movement, the resilience, and the beauty of a culture that has always known how to endure.
We believe art is presence. And presence changes a room — and the people in it.
Gallery & Exhibitions
Monica's work has been exhibited at the Art Box Gallery in St. Augustine, Florida, where her paintings have been received as both personal narrative and cultural celebration. La Mosa Galeria brings that same gallery-quality experience to collectors and art lovers everywhere, with museum-grade Giclée prints produced to the highest standards of color fidelity and archival permanence.
