Bomba Bajo El Sol Taíno — Bomba Under the Taíno Sun
He dances where his ancestors once stood — and the sun smiles down on every step.
In this radiant and culturally rich original painting, a young male Bomba dancer moves with youthful energy and deep-rooted pride. Dressed in light yellow pants and a sleeveless blue-tan shirt, his Taíno necklace resting at his chest, he is the living bridge between the indigenous and Afro-Caribbean souls of Puerto Rico. Two tambores stand beside him, steady witnesses to his dance.
But it is the world behind him that takes your breath away.
The background is a mural of the tower of El Morro — the iconic fortress that has stood watch over Puerto Rico for centuries. Climbing its ancient tower is a Taíno coquí, making its way upward toward a glowing Taíno sun. The sun smiles — warm, alive, intentional — its light radiating outward and piercing through a deep, dark blue sky, illuminating everything below with golden purpose.
This is a painting about legacy and light. About a people who survived the darkness of colonization and slavery and still found reason to dance, to climb, to shine. The coquí reaches for the sun. The dancer reaches for the drum. And together, they remind us that Puerto Rican identity — Taíno, African, resilient — has always found its way toward the light.
